Disaster Risk Reduction /Climate Change Adaptation and First Aid training for primary students
In total, 420 students of grade 4 and 5 were trained FA skills and 2,146 students were involved in DRR training classes in the 2 cities. Before, 54 teachers and 150 teachers of those schools were trained FA skills and DRR/CCA respectively so that they could teach their students. Those trainings also involved the staffs from the Cities Offices of Education and Training who monitored the activity as a part of an effort to integrate disaster risk reduction into school curriculum which will ultimately result in an increase in school safety in the face of disasters and climate change.
The main purposes of these trainings are to provide the basic knowledge and skills of FA as well as DRR/CCA to students so that those children know how to help themselves and their families in preparing and responding to natural disasters, and in conducting basic first aid to their friends or their relatives in emergency situations.
The activity has received warm welcome and high appreciation from the management boards of the 7 primary schools as well as their students. Mr. Nguyen Tan Si, the Principal of the no.1 Nhon Binh primary school (Quy Nhon), said to a Binh Dinh TV’s reporter during an interview that: “Floods and storms often happen in the area of our school. Thus, it is really necessary for our staff, teachers, and especially students to have knowledge of DRR/CCA as well as FA skills in order to prepare for and respond to natural disasters effectively. We would like to express our deep gratitude to the project for this meaningful and practical activity.”
In addition, Ha My Phung – a student of class 4D – Hai Cang primary school (Quy Nhon) said: “I’m very interested in the DRR/CCA training because after the class, I told my parents what I have learnt to prepare, prevent and respond to natural disasters.” Meanwhile, talking about FA training class, Do Dang Minh Hoang – a student of class 4D in the no.2 Nhon Binh primary school (Quy Nhon) simply shared: “I like this class because I feel happy, because in the future I can save human’s lives.”
Furthermore, this activity was also highly appreciated by the local social media.
